Restylane Injections

When your face loses its youthful volume and becomes etched with creases and folds, it can really show your age. That’s why many men and women seek Restylane treatment for facial rejuvenation—it can help restore volume to the skin, smooth away wrinkles and enhance facial areas that have become sunken or shapeless over the years.

What is Restylane?

logo_restylaneRestylane is an FDA approved injectable soft tissue filler made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance produced by your body to cushion and lubricate your joints, eyes, and other tissues.

Restylane is commonly used to help adults temporarily:

  • Lessen severity of wrinkles and facial folds
  • Enhance asymmetrical or thin lips
  • Treat under eye puffiness and dark circles
  • Mask acne scars and other skin depressions
  • Augment the cheeks, chin and nose
  • Restore volume to veiny, withered hands

How Restylane Injections Work

When injected under your skin, the Restylane hyaluronic acid gel hydrates skin tissues and plumps depressions from underneath the skin’s surface. This is why Restylane treatment is so effective for wrinkle reduction and lip augmentation. After 4-6 months, the Restylane product is broken down and absorbed by the body, so repeat injections are needed to maintain results.

Restylane-L, the latest Restylane formula, also contains an anesthetic called lidocaine, which is designed to make injections more comfortable and reduce the need for separate local anesthesia or skin numbing treatments prior to Restylane injections.

If you decide to undergo facial rejuvenation with Restylane injections, Dr. Basu will talk with you about where he needs to inject the product to achieve your desired results. After cleansing your skin, he will carefully inject 1-2 syringes of Restylane during your initial treatment session and may recommend a touch-up session 1-2 weeks later, depending on your needs.

The entire treatment takes about 15-20 minutes to perform, and patients may return to normal daily activities immediately (wait 24 hours to resume strenuous activity). You will notice an immediate improvement in your skin, and your results will continue to improve over the next 1-2 weeks.

Restylane Side Effects

There are very few potential side effects associated with Restylane, and most Restylane side effects that do occur are temporary and minor. After having Restylane injections, some patients report mild bruising, swelling and/or redness at the injection sites that typically lasts for up to a week. Makeup can be used to camouflage these temporary side effects after the first 24 hours.

More serious side effects, such as infection or development of lumps and bumps, can typically be avoided by following post-treatment instructions and ensuring you have a skilled physician performing your injections. Dr. Basu is one of Houston’s leading board certified plastic surgeons, and he has several years of experience helping his Restylane patients achieve the best possible facial rejuvenation results.

Restylane vs. Juvederm

Restylane and Juvederm are similar in their composition (both are made of hyaluronic acid gel), and they produce similar results. Juvederm is known for being slightly smoother and more pliable than Restylane, which means Juvederm injections are sometimes preferred for lip augmentation and correction of under eye bags.

However, the difference in the results produced by Restylane and Juvederm are marginal, and the preference of which filler to use depends largely on the patient. Many patients convert to using Restylane if they feel it produces better results for them, and it is not uncommon to find Restylane patients trying out Juvederm as well.

Dr. Basu will help you decide which filler to try first at your initial consultation, and chances are you will be pleased with the results either way. If Dr. Basu feels your results could be even better, he may recommend that you try the other hyaluronic acid filler product during your next facial rejuvenation session.
