  • Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
  • Diplomat, American Board of Plastic Surgery
  • Diplomat, American Board of Surgery

Dr. Sugene Kim is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a diplomate of American Board of Plastic Surgery. As one of the few female plastic surgeons in the Houston area, Dr. Sugene Kim brings her extensive training and experience from Washington, DC, New York City, and the Texas Medical Center to our community here in The Woodlands. Dr. Kim graduated magna cum laude from Yale University (New Haven CT), where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She earned her M.D. degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

She completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital and is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. Following her residency, she returned to New York to complete a fellowship in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine / Montefiore Medical Center.

At Montefiore, she had the opportunity to train under Dr. Berish Strauch, a pioneer in the field of reconstructive microsurgery. In addition, she completed cosmetic surgery rotations at New York City’s prestigious Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary and honed her skills with training with internationally recognized plastic surgeons on Park Avenue. Dr. Kim has also completed additional training in Seoul, South Korea to bring advanced techniques in Asian ethnic cosmetic surgery to Houston.

With a keen interest in breast reconstruction, she dedicated an additional year to immerse herself in a second fellowship in microsurgery at the prestigious M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She focused heavily on advanced techniques in breast reconstruction including muscle-sparing DIEP flaps and SIEA flaps.

Dr. Kim’s extensive experience in leading-edge breast reconstruction makes her a superb choice for breast surgeries in the Houston area. In fact, Dr Kim is currently the only MD Anderson fellowship-trained plastic surgeon in The Woodlands. Dr. Kim was the first to perform the DIEP flap breast reconstruction procedure in The Woodlands and North Houston.

Dr. Sugene Kim has received numerous honors and awards including a “Mother of Pearls Award” for the Best Resident Teacher among 450 residents at the Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Kim continues to value her role as a teacher and considers all her consultations with patients an important opportunity to educate you about your options.

Dr. Kim was born in South Korea and moved to the United States when she was in 8th grade. Being transplanted in America at a rather awkward age posed several challenges and growing pains; however, in retrospect, Dr. Kim is thankful that she was fortunate enough to have spent her early years in Korea and her formative years in America. Exposure into both cultures not only enabled her to be bilingual but also taught her to be sympathetic to different perspectives and respectful of patients and colleagues of diverse backgrounds and situations.

To further round her out as a person, Dr. Kim tries to find time to watch action movies, play the piano, travel, and spend time with her family.
