Choose Confidence: Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia

Many young men who are in college or just starting college seek male breast reduction for gynecomastia (excessive male breast tissue). College can be a stressful time for students as they learn to navigate through the ups and downs of campus life and self-image should be the last of their worries.

Before and After Gynecomastia Surgery

Enlarged male breasts – often referred to as “man boobs” – can be the result of a condition called gynecomastia. This condition is caused by a hormonal imbalance that tends to peak during adolescence due to changes in hormonal activity that occur during puberty, and causes the male breasts to store an excessive amount of fatty tissue. Pseudo-gynecomastia, though not due to a hormonal imbalance, is a cosmetic concern that produces the same results of excess body fat in the male chest. Both gynecomastia and pseudo-gynecomastia affect nearly 40 percent of men in the United States. The upside of this condition is that it is medically harmless. The downside however, is that gynecomastia directly impacts men’s self-confidence.

How Male Breast Reduction or Gynecomastia Surgery Works

Once a patient has consulted with Dr. Basu and discussed all of their cosmetic goals and concerns, he will help them understand the procedure and how it will help. For men who are significantly overweight, Dr. Basu may recommend adopting a weight loss program before undergoing the procedure to ensure the best results. During the procedure, Dr. Basu removes excess fat, skin and glandular tissue in order to create a more masculine chest contour. This process includes the use of liposuction to remove fat from under the skin, a tissue excision or a combination of the two techniques.

Depending on the extent of the surgery, the procedure can be done using either general or local anesthesia, and involves a small incision on each side of the chest. These incisions can be located along the portion of the areola or within the armpit, and it is through these incisions that any excess fat and/or glandular tissue is removed. These discreet scars usually fade over time, and the chest is left contoured in a way that looks natural to each individual’s body.
