What is Kybella?

Kybella is a non-surgical injectable treatment used for reducing moderate to severe fat below the chin, commonly known as a “double chin”. Kybella is produced by Allergan, the makers of other aesthetic treatments such as Botox, Juvéderm, and CoolSculpting.

How does it work?

Kybella injections are formulated with a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a natural molecule found in the body, to break down fat cells. Once injected, the treated fat cells die, are then eliminated by the body’s natural disposal system, and are no longer able to store or accumulate fat. When Kybella is injected into the treatment area around the chin, the stubborn fat that gathers in that area is broken down for good, thus effectively reducing your “double chin”.

Is Kybella safe?

Kybella is FDA-approved for reducing submental fat (double chin). In fact, Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells in the treatment area under the chin.

Benefits

Why Consider Kybella?

Kybella is primarily used to reduce moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also known as a “double chin”. Many of our Houston medspa patients opt for Kybella injections over other double chin treatment alternatives, as Kybella provides the following benefits:

  • Non-Surgical: Kybella offers a non-surgical method for reducing submental fullness.
  • Cost-Effective: Double chin treatment with Kybella is more affordable than traditional surgical options like liposuction.
  • Downtime: Kybella injections require little to no downtime.
  • Lasting Results: Once the desired effect is achieved, the results are typically quite long-lasting, as the fat cells are destroyed.
  • Quick Treatment: Each session typically takes around 20-30 minutes.
  • Fully Customizable: Treatment plans can be tailored to meet individual patient’s needs.
  • FDA-Approved: Kybella is approved by the FDA for treating a double chin.

The ideal Kybella candidate

Both women and men may benefit from Kybella injections if they fall into one or more of the following categories:

  1. People who have a hereditary double chin
  2. People who have undergone weight fluctuations but cannot lose fat under the chin with diet and exercise
  3. People who feel self-conscious about the appearance of their double chin

How much do Kybella injections cost in Houston?

The cost of Kybella varies depending on the number of appointments needed to reach your ideal results. Your total costs will include the cost of the product and all injection-related fees.

At Basu Aesthetics + Plastic Surgery, we offer frequent special promotions for a range of cosmetic procedures. We also offer plastic surgery financing options and monthly specials to help make your treatments and procedures even more affordable.

Your Kybella Treatment

Consultation

During your consultation, one of our expert injectors will meet with you one-on-one and describe the Kybella treatment in greater detail. They will answer any questions you may have, discuss your desired goals, and will also provide an estimate of the number of treatments you may need and when you can expect to see your final results.

What to expect from your treatment

Once you’ve decided to move forward with Kybella treatments, the procedure itself is fairly straightforward.

While Kybella injections are typically not painful, you may be treated with a topical numbing cream or an ice pack prior to your injections to maximize your comfort.

Each Kybella treatment takes about 15 to 20 minutes to administer. During your appointment, your providor will carefully inject the product directly into the submental area of the chin. Up to 50 injections may be administered during a single appointment, depending on your individual needs.

It is possible that you may need more than one treatment to achieve the results you are looking for. In fact, most people benefit from a series of 2 to 6 treatment sessions spaced about 1 month apart.

After Treatment

Side effects & recovery time

One of the advantages of Kybella for treating a double chin is the little-to-no downtime, as injectable treatments allow most individuals to return to their daily activities quickly.

You may experience temporary swelling, redness or bruising of the treatment area immediately following your appointment, but these effects should fade within about 1 week. If you experience more severe side effects, such as trouble swallowing, contact your doctor immediately.

Results

You can expect to see see your final results within 4 to 6 weeks of your final appointment; however, individual experiences vary. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent future weight gain can help you enjoy long-lasting results from your Kybella treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kybella Injections

Kybella vs Neck liposuction: Which is right for me?

Both Kybella and submental liposuction (a.k.a. chin lipo) both aim to remove submental fat, but they are very different procedures and differ greatly in recovery time. Kybella is non-surgical and involves injections that dissolve fat over time, with minimal downtime after treatment, but potentially multiple sessions. Neck liposuction is a surgical procedure that offers immediate results, but it requires more recovery time as well as carries surgical risks. The right choice for you depends on your general health, your desired outcomes, willingness/tolerance for surgery, and recovery preferences. We can help you determine which route would be a better fit for you and your specific needs during a personal consultation with Dr. Basu or a member of his aesthetics team.

How does Kybella differ from CoolSculpting for treating a double chin?

Kybella and CoolSculpting are popular non-surgical treatments for reducing double chin but work differently. Treatment with Kybella involves injections that dissolve fat cells, while CoolSculpting freezes fat cells through a process called cryolipolysis. Both procedures are non-surgical and cause the treated fat cells to die and then be naturally eliminated from the body. The best way to decide whether Kybella or CoolSculpting (or another option, such as neck lipo) would help you achieve your desired goals would be to meet with a member of our team during a private consultation.

Can I pair other treatments or procedures with it?

However, we may make recommendations for additional procedures to help you meet your aesthetic goals. Many people combine KYBELLA treatments with other injectable products such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or JUVÉDERM® for a more comprehensive facial enhancement.

People who are fine-tuning their weight loss success may combine KYBELLA with liposuction of the body for a more streamlined look. Some women choose to include KYBELLA in their mommy makeovers, while men may opt for KYBELLA after weight loss or instead of a surgical chin augmentation.

Does Kybella hurt?

Kybella injections may cause mild to moderate discomfort as the injections are being administered, similar to other injectable treatments. The treatment area might also feel tender, swollen, or numb for a few days following the procedure. Pain tolerance varies among individuals, and your injector may use a topical anesthetic or ice pack to minimize discomfort during your treatment.

How many treatments will i need?

The number of Kybella treatments needed varies from person-to-person, depending on the amount of submental fat present in their chin as well as their desired results. Generally, patients require anywhere between 2 to 6 treatment sessions, spaced at least one month apart. During your consultation, one of our expert injectors will provide a recommendation of the number of treatments needed to help you reach your goals.

Will Kybella help tighten loose skin under the chin?

Kybella is designed primarily to dissolve submental fat, not to tighten loose skin. While some patients might notice a slight tightening effect as the fat is reduced, Kybella doesn’t directly address skin laxity. If you are primarily concerned with loose or sagging skin under the chin, then other treatments, possibly in combination with Kybella or instead of it, might be more appropriate for you. During your consulation, a member of our qualified aesthetics team will look at your anatomy and help come up with a customized treatment plan to effectively treat any and all of your concerns.

How do I choose the right provider for my Kybella injections?

Selecting a provider for your Kybella treatment is probably the most important step in your cosmetic journey.
