What is the Hair Growth Cycle?

Both men and women experience hair loss, affecting around 80 million Americans. Understanding the hair growth cycle can help set realistic expectations for your hair restoration treatment results. Hair growth occurs in four phases:

  • Anagen phase: The growth phase, where hair follicles actively produce new hair. This phase lasts around 3-7 years and includes 90% of the hairs on your head.
  • Catagen phase: The transition phase, lasting around 10 days. Hair production slows, and follicles shrink. About 5% of the hairs are in this phase.
  • Telogen phase: The resting phase, affecting 10-15% of hairs at any time. Hair isn’t growing but hasn’t fallen out yet. New hair is forming underneath the old ones.
  • Exogen phase: The shedding phase, where old hairs fall out. You lose 50-100 hairs daily as new hair prepares to enter the growth phase.

Treatment Options for Hair Loss at Basu Aesthetics + Plastic Surgery

NeoGraft

NeoGraft is a cutting-edge hair transplant method that moves hair from the back of your head to areas experiencing thinning or balding. It’s suitable for both men and women suffering from pattern baldness, offering natural-looking results.

Benefits of NeoGraft:

  • One-day procedure
  • Minimal downtime
  • No incisions or linear scars
  • High follicle survival rate
  • Natural-looking hair grafts
  • Boosts self-confidence

Candidacy:

Ideal NeoGraft candidates have healthy hair follicles in the donor area, typically the back of the head, and stable hair loss. Good candidates are in good health and have realistic expectations about results.

Treatment process:

NeoGraft uses a suction system that avoids scarring by making small punches instead of incisions. Hair follicles are carefully selected from the donor area and placed into areas with hair loss. This process ensures high follicle survival and a natural look.

Recovery:

Recovery takes 3-7 days. The scalp will be bandaged, and mild swelling, redness, and soreness are normal. These side effects can be managed with pain medication. It’s essential to avoid strenuous activity and damaging the transplanted hair for a few days.

PRF Injections

PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is derived from your blood and injected into the scalp to stimulate follicle growth. PRF contains growth factors that help activate dormant follicles, promoting thicker, healthier hair growth. Unlike PRP, PRF uses a fibrin matrix that allows for slower, sustained release of growth factors, enhancing results.

Benefits of PRF:

  • Low risk of allergic reactions
  • Non-surgical and minimally invasive
  • No downtime
  • Natural-looking results
  • Boosts collagen production
  • Increases self-confidence
  • Effective for age-related hair loss

Candidacy:

PRF injections work best for patients in the early stages of hair loss, where hair follicles are still dormant rather than fully inactive. Conditions PRF can treat include:
Female pattern hair loss

  • Male pattern hair loss
  • Alopecia totalis
  • Alopecia areata
  • Hypotrichosis

Treatment Process:

A blood sample is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to isolate the PRF. The PRF is then injected into thinning areas of the scalp to stimulate hair growth. Results typically become visible within a few months.

Recovery:

PRF treatment is generally painless with no downtime. Minor swelling in the forehead may occur but usually subsides within a few days. Patients should avoid UV exposure and strenuous exercise for a short period after treatment.

  • Add HydraFacial Keravive: HydraFacial Keravive is a non-invasive scalp treatment designed to cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish the scalp while promoting a healthy environment for hair growth. Using a combination of exfoliation, hydration, and specialized growth serums, this treatment helps improve scalp circulation, remove buildup, and stimulate follicles for thicker, healthier-looking hair. Ideal for those experiencing thinning or early-stage hair loss, HydraFacial Keravive supports overall scalp wellness and hair vitality.
  • Add Nutrafol Vitamins: Nutrafol offers physician-formulated supplements designed to support hair growth from within. Packed with clinically studied botanicals, vitamins, and minerals, Nutrafol targets key factors that impact hair health, including stress, hormones, and nutrition. Regular use can help strengthen hair, improve density, and promote thicker, healthier-looking strands over time.
