Rhinoplasty Houston | Houston Nose Surgery

Your nose is one of your most prominent facial features so it’s not surprising that nose reshaping or rhinoplasty is extremely popular for men and women in Houston as well as all over the country. Making improvements to your appearance and self-confidence with rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery) can positively impact every aspect of your life. Because it is such an important feature of your face and serves important vital health functions, you want to select a facial plastic surgeon with specialized training who will listen and fully understand your aesthetic expectations. Board-certified surgeon Dr. Taylor DeBusk’s extensive experience performing rhinoplasty as well as his deep understanding of nasal anatomy and physiology make him the premiere choice.

What is rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery (also known as a “nose job”) is a procedure that involves reshaping the bones and cartilage in the nose to either improve the appearance or correct structural issues.

What does rhinoplasty treat?

Rhinoplasty treats various aesthetic and structural issues in the nose, including:

  • Noses with a bulbous nasal tip
  • Nose disproportion or asymmetry
  • An upturned or downturned nose tip
  • Noses that appear too wide or long for the face
  • Breathing difficulties due to structural issues, like a deviated septum or previously broken nose
  • Noses that have a bump (dorsal hump) on the nose bridge (nasal dorsum)

Benefits of rhinoplasty

The goal of nose reshaping surgery is to enhance your appearance, balance your features, boost your self-esteem, correct a nasal defect, and alleviate breathing problems.

I am thrilled with my rhinoplasty by Dr. DeBusk. He is a wonderful artist and very nice person. His staff is so much fun yet still totally professional. I highly recommend Dr. DeBusk! Thank you very much!

How does rhinoplasty improve breathing?

Dr. DeBusk can incorporate these procedures during your rhinoplasty surgery to alleviate breathing issues:

  • Septoplasty. The nasal septum is the thin medial bone and cartilage wall separating the left and right nostrils. A deviated (bent or crooked) septum can obstruct airflow through the nose and cause difficulty breathing. Septoplasty straightens the septum to help you breathe easier.
  • Turbinate reduction. Nasal turbinates are small, shelf-like structures in your nose that help humidify and filter the air you breathe. Sometimes, these can become enlarged and limit airflow. You may also be predisposed to having larger turbinates. Dr. DeBusk can reduce the size to improve airflow.
  • Nasal valve collapse correction. If the nose valve (the narrowest part of the nasal airway) is too narrow or collapses when you breathe in, it can cause significant breathing problems. This issue can be corrected during rhinoplasty by using cartilage grafts to provide additional support to widen the valve and prevent collapse.
  • Removal or reduction of nasal polyps. Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths on the lining of your nose passages or sinuses and may cause breathing problems if they become too large or numerous. Medication is typically used to treat nasal polyps; however, they may need to be reduced or removed surgically in some cases, and this can be done during a rhinoplasty procedure.
  • Reconstruction after trauma or disease. Trauma, tumors, or infections can damage the structures of the nose to the point where you cannot breathe as well. Rhinoplasty can rebuild the nose and restore its normal functions.

If you’re considering rhinoplasty for breathing issues (functional rhinoplasty), during your personal consultation Dr. DeBusk will ask about your concerns in detail as well as conduct a careful assessment of your nose anatomy and then recommend the best surgical techniques and plan for you.

Nose job candidates

You are likely a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you feel your nose doesn’t fit with or balance your other facial features or are unhappy with your nose’s appearance. You may also be a candidate if you have breathing problems due to defects in the structure of your nose. The best rhinoplasty procedures should have an outcome that looks true to you, balanced with your bone structure and other facial features.

During your consultation, in addition to discussing your personal aesthetic goals, we will review your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery. Nose surgery patients should:

  • Be in general good health
  • Be non-smokers
  • Have realistic expectations about the procedure’s outcomes

I’ve always had an insecurity over the bump on my nose that made me never want people to look at the side of my face. Dr. DeBusk proved his abilities early on by showing nothing but confidence during my virtual consultation. By my pre-op, it was clear he had a plan in place and knew just what I needed. I’m still just a few days out and in recovery, but by the photo he sent of my nose directly out of surgery before swelling started, I can already tell this is going to TRANSFORM my confidence!

Types of nose surgery techniques

Dr. DeBusk will explain which type of rhinoplasty approach will best achieve your appearance and functional goals. The two most common nose surgery techniques are open and closed.

Open technique

Open rhinoplasty is designed to provide surgeons with broader, more direct visibility and access to the structures of the nose. An incision is made across the narrow strip of nasal skin that separates the nostrils at the base of the nose called the columella. This allows Dr. DeBusk to lift the flap of skin and soft tissues for an unobstructed view of the underlying anatomy.

Advantages of open rhinoplasty

Dr. DeBusk prefers an open rhinoplasty technique as it provides the most control over the changes for more precise reshaping. An open technique is especially useful in complex cases, such as revision rhinoplasty (secondary rhinoplasty), when more extensive work is required to achieve aesthetically pleasing results that also allow optimal functionality.

Closed technique

Closed rhinoplasty, also known as endonasal rhinoplasty, uses incisions made inside the nostrils to reshape the nose; however, the visibility of the nasal structures is limited. This can make it more challenging to make precise alterations that may impact function or aesthetic outcomes.

The surgical process

Dr. DeBusk will perform your procedure in our private, on-site Beleza Surgery Center—a state-of-the-art, fully accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). The specific process depends on the type of rhinoplasty you and Dr. DeBusk choose and whether or not you have additional procedures to address issues contributing to breathing concerns.

I had a septoplasty and rhinoplasty surgery at the same time with Dr. Debusk. He is the most caring doctor I have ever seen. My surgery went smoothly and beautifully with no stress and pain. He is a great doctor at the same time he is a very nice human. I definitely had the best experience and will recommend it to anyone who wants to do this but has a fear of surgery or any other reasons…

Rhinoplasty recovery

Here is an overview of what you can generally expect during your rhinoplasty recovery.

  • Immediately after surgery. Dr. DeBusk will apply a nose splint to support the new shape as the bones, cartilage, and tissue heal.
  • 1 week after surgery. Your splint and sutures will be removed at your one-week follow-up appointment. Significant swelling and some bruising are expected and will not reflect your final results.
  • 1 month after surgery. Most of the swelling will have resolved, and most people will not be able to tell you just had a nose job, though you will still notice some swelling.
  • 4 months after surgery. Swelling has continued to gradually diminish, and you’ll be able to see what your final results will look like.
  • 1 year after surgery. Your nose will be fully healed and settled into its new size and shape.

Rhinoplasty results

Your final results will be visible 12-18 months after rhinoplasty surgery. You may notice very slight changes in your nose during this time as your skin contracts down, and your results will be influenced by the thickness of your skin and the extent of your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How painful is rhinoplasty?

You won’t feel anything during rhinoplasty surgery thanks to anesthesia, but patients find that recovery can initially be mildly painful—but this is easily managed with medication. You may feel some mild continued discomfort and soreness around your nose in the weeks following surgery as swelling diminishes and your tissues continue healing.

Dr. DeBusk will prescribe pain medication to help you manage your discomfort; you’ll likely be able to switch to OTC pain relievers after a few days. The swelling and congestion after nose surgery may also mean you can only breathe through your mouth for several weeks; this may cause some minor short-term irritation to your throat.

Can rhinoplasty change my voice?

Changes in your voice after rhinoplasty are rare and typically only occur when the surgery significantly alters the nasal passages, affecting resonance. You may sound stuffy or congested for several weeks, but most patients do not experience changes in how they sound.

Can I wear glasses after my rhinoplasty?

You cannot wear glasses for about 4-8 weeks after rhinoplasty surgery. It is imperative that you do not apply any pressure or allow anything to rest on the bridge of your nose while it is healing. Dr. DeBusk will clear you to wear glasses once it is safe to do so.

Will rhinoplasty incisions leave a scar?

You’ll have a very thin scar along the columella at the base of your nose after nasal reconstruction. Most patients who adhere to aftercare guidelines report that their scar is imperceivable to others. Dr. DeBusk meticulously places this incision to be concealed within the natural creases of your nose and carefully closes the incision to leave behind a thin, nearly invisible scar. (Closed rhinoplasty scars are hidden inside the nostrils, however, this version of the procedure can not deliver the level of results achievable with open rhinoplasty.)

Can I choose what I want my nose to look like?

You and Dr. DeBusk will discuss your desired look at length during your consultation, however; it’s essential to understand that everyone’s facial structure is unique, and what suits one person may not suit you. Dr. DeBusk will help you understand what aesthetic changes will help your facial features balance beautifully as well as what is realistically possible to achieve based on your anatomy.

Can I get rhinoplasty if I have a cold or sinus infection?

Nose surgery is typically postponed if you have a significant cold, sinus infection, or other temporary illness to ensure the safest conditions for surgery and recovery.

How often do people need a revision rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty rates are between 5-15% of cases and are typically due to unforeseen healing issues or dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome. Choosing a highly experienced, board-certified surgeon is the best way to reduce your chances of needing a revision.

What is the recovery time for a nose job?

You can return to work or school within two weeks following rhinoplasty surgery, and your nose will appear externally healed by about a month out; however, full healing and final results after nose surgery can take 12-18 months to develop.

Are there non-surgical alternatives for noses?

Yes, dermal fillers can temporarily alter the shape of your nose (known as a non-surgical nose job) and give you a preview of what your nose could look like after rhinoplasty—depending on your aesthetic vision for your appearance. However, a nonsurgical rhinoplasty with filler can not achieve subtractive changes or address breathing concerns.

How old do I have to be to get nose surgery?

Cosmetic rhinoplasties are elective and can be performed on adults 18 and older once facial growth is complete. Younger patients may be considered depending on why rhinoplasty is needed, like after an accident or sport-related injury that has caused trauma to the nose and is affecting the patient’s aesthetic appearance or functionality. Children with cleft lips or cleft palates are also exceptions.
