When a Breast Augmentation Doesn’t Go as Planned

Breast augmentation is extremely popular in the United States, with more than 300,000 procedures performed every year. While these are often very satisfying procedures, problems sometimes do occur with breast implants for Houston women. Although implants are generally very durable, certain things can cause them to rupture or deflate, which may require breast implant revision to repair and restore them to the desired appearance.

What Causes Ruptured Implants?

Breast implant deflation or rupture occurs when the outer shell of the implant fails. Possible causes for this occurrence include the following:

  • Trauma
  • Improper fill level of saline implants
  • Excessive wrinkling of the implant
  • Defective valve or seam
  • Abnormal wear and tear

How to Detect a Breast Implant Rupture

Women who experience saline breast implant deflation usually notice a rapid size decrease and softness in one of their breasts. This may be accompanied by nausea or unusual sensations in the chest. Saline is harmless if absorbed by the body, so there should not be any immediate risk to your health.

Silicone implant rupture is not as easy to detect, however, and requires an MRI. If you think you may have an implant rupture of either type, contact Dr. Basu immediately.

How Much Does Breast Implant Rupture Repair Cost?

The cost of a breast implant repair or replacement can sometimes be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Most breast implant warranties carry a lifetime replacement policy and some financial assistance to help pay for the cost of breast implant revision. This is something that you can discuss with Dr. Basu prior to your repair surgery to get a better idea of what your individual situation might entail.

Dr. B is a perfectionist, and after all, that is what we are looking for. I am so happy with my results that I'm recommending him to a friend from out of town...

Your Breast Implant Repair Surgery

Replacement of the breast implant or implants is performed in a surgery similar to the original breast augmentation. In many cases, the breast implant is accessed through the same incision site to minimize scarring. First, the ruptured breast implant needs to be freed from the surrounding tissue and removed. The breast pocket will then be cleaned and reshaped before new implants are put into place.

Your Recovery & Results

Because each woman has different needs, recovery times will vary with breast revision procedures like implant repair. Some procedures, especially where scar tissue surrounds the implant, are rather complex, so they might require additional recovery. Other procedures are simpler, so some women may be able to expect a recovery period that is comparable to that of a breast augmentation. In these cases, many women begin to see their final results within six months.
