What is liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures around, and with good reason! This procedure targets common problem areas like the hips, love handles, thighs, and abdomen where patients often struggle with excess, stubborn fat. During the procedure, a small incision is made and a thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted to break up and remove the fat cells. Especially under the care and artful eye of Dr. Basu, liposuction is a safe, effective way to contour your body and enjoy a sleek new silhouette with confidence.

Why Consider Liposuction?

As one of the top cosmetic surgeries performed nationwide, liposuction can be helpful for many people who wish to achieve a fitter look. Some of the reasons people consider liposuction include:

  • Stubborn areas like the love handles or thighs don’t slim down despite diet and exercise
  • Hereditary features like a double chin or “cankles” prevent a sense of confidence about your appearance
  • A muffin top or other problem spot prevents clothes from fitting comfortably
  • Inner thighs chafe as a result of persistent fat

Common Treatment Areas

  • Abdomen or stomach
  • Waist, hips, or love handles
  • Buttocks, thighs, or saddlebags
  • Back or bra bulges
  • Chin and neck
  • Men’s chest

Liposuction can be applied virtually anywhere on the body, so if you have an area of concern that is not listed here, it’s very likely that Dr. Basu can help. Many people include liposuction with procedures like a tummy tuck or as part of a mommy makeover.

Liposuction can also be a beautiful complement to a healthy lifestyle by improving stubborn problem spots. Please note that to be considered as a candidate for liposuction surgery, you must have a BMI of 40 or less.

The Skinny Shot Weight Loss Program

Achieve your ideal body weight prior to surgery for a safer procedure with the best possible results.

In the past, we would request that patients achieve their ideal weight prior to surgery and come back to Basu Aesthetics once they have done so. This has changed thanks to new advancements in the Semaglutide and Tirezepatide family of medications that have recently become available for patients. We now offer The Skinny Shot semaglutide treatment as part of our comprehensive approach for our patients. The Skinny Shot can help you achieve your ideal body weight prior to surgery for the best possible aesthetic result. In addition, it has been shown that patients with a lower BMI undergoing plastic surgery have a lower risk of complications. Treatment with The Skinny Shot not only improves your results, but it may also make your surgery safer.

Your Houston Liposuction Options

Once you’ve made the decision to move forward with your Houston liposuction, you can consider your procedure options.

The main choice to make is which area(s) of the body you would like to have treated. While most people can name their personal problem areas, Dr. Basu can help you determine in your consultation whether these spots can indeed benefit from liposuction or whether some additional time to reach your target weight may be necessary. It’s important to remember that liposuction is not a weight loss alternative, and is best for areas that don’t respond to diet and exercise.

You can also consider whether to combine your Houston liposuction with any additional body contouring. While lipo can create beautiful results as a standalone procedure, many people like to get the most out of their results by combining lipo with other procedures. For people interested in a non-surgical alternative to liposuction, CoolSculpting® can be a good option as well.

Liposuction Techniques, Incisions & Technologies

Traditional

Traditional liposuction, or suction-assisted liposuction, is the tried-and-true method for getting rid of stubborn fat. With a small incision and a cannula, we manually remove excess fat from your target area to give you the silhouette you want. It’s a reliable, time-tested method that can work for most body types.

Power-Assisted

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) is all about vibration! A special device that vibrates the cannula can make it easier to remove tough fat with less damage to surrounding tissue and more accuracy. This means you can recover faster and feel more comfortable overall.

Ultrasonic-Assisted

Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL) uses high-frequency sound waves to liquefy fat cells before they are removed with a cannula. This technique is especially good for targeting dense, fibrous areas and achieving a smoother, more sculpted look.

SmartLipo

SmartLipo (a laser-assisted liposuction method) is an innovative technique that uses a laser to melt away fat cells before we suction them out. It can also stimulate collagen production to help tighten skin in the treated area. You’ll love the way it can give you a smoother, more toned appearance with less downtime.

Dr. Basu talks about the different types of liposuction available from Basu Aesthetics + Plastic Surgery that can help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

During your consultation, Dr. Basu will assess your unique body type and choose which liposuction technique will best get you to your desired results.

Your Houston Liposuction Surgery

Dr. Basu will discuss your concerns with you and explain the details of your liposuction during your consultation. He’ll work with you to determine a surgical plan that best suits your needs to achieve your aesthetic goals.

The techniques Dr. Basu uses during liposuction can vary depending on the individual’s needs. For smaller fat removal procedures, you will be given a local anesthetic with sedation. The procedure may last as little as 45 minutes. If you undergo more extensive liposuction, your surgery will likely take place using general anesthesia and could last 2 hours or more.

Dr. Basu will make one or more small incisions in and around the treatment area. Through these incisions, he will insert a thin tube called a cannula after injecting a tumescent solution. This solution makes the fat cells easier to remove and works as an additional anesthetic. When inserted, the cannula will be used to suction out excess fat cells.

Dr. Basu takes special care to create aesthetically pleasing contours that complement the natural shape of your body. When finished, Dr. Basu will close the incisions with sutures and apply a dressing and surgical tape.

Your Recovery & Results

As you recover from your liposuction in Houston, you will likely experience some swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with medication. Dr. Basu will ask you to wear a compression garment during this time. This will help both to minimize swelling and to maintain the new contours of your body. You will need to limit your activity during the initial recovery period, although some light walking during the first 24 hours of your recovery is important to stimulate blood circulation and your body’s natural healing process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction

Can men get liposuction?

Men can benefit from liposuction just as much as women can, but men often come to us with concerns unique to their bodies, wanting to achieve a more masculine, toned look. Dr. Basu can help you slim problem areas and define your muscles. Learn more about liposuction for men.

Will I have scars from lipo?

During liposuction, Dr. Basu is careful to make very small incisions. This means liposuction leaves only small scars that can easily be hidden by clothing or swimsuits. We’ll also give you detailed aftercare instructions to help your scars heal quickly and effectively.

How much weight can you lose with liposuction?

It’s important to remember that liposuction is not a weight loss solution–it’s a body contouring procedure designed to remove stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to a healthy lifestyle  with a balanced diet and exercise. You should be close to your ideal body weight before undergoing liposuction. That being said, you can still expect to see a noticeable difference in the way your clothes fit and the way you look in the mirror.

We also now offer our patients The Skinny Shot semaglutide treatment as part of our comprehensive approach for your surgical journey. The Skinny Shot can help patients achieve their ideal body weight prior to surgery and helping to improve their results.

How long do lipo results last?

Liposuction results are long-lasting, but it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid gaining weight in the future and affecting your results. With proper diet and exercise, you can enjoy your sleek new silhouette for years to come!
