Despite dreary economic forecasts, the demand for plastic surgery has soared. Our very own Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Bob Basu, was recently featured in an article by The Washington Post, which reports that concerns about a deep recession seem unwarranted as more people than ever are purchasing luxury items, including plastic surgery.
In the August 2023 article, titled “What recession? This summer’s economy is defying the odds,” Dr. Basu shares how business at his plastic surgery practice, Basu Aesthetics + Plastic Surgery, far exceeded his expectations thus far.
“We anticipated things would cool this year—people are dealing with inflation, they’re worried about recession and economic volatility,” said Dr. Basu. “But I am happy to report I was incorrect: Demand just keeps growing.”
Aesthetic procedures are expected to grow by another 15% by the end of the year.
Keeping up with demand
Dr. Basu has been one of Houston’s premier plastic surgeons for almost two decades and has added an ENT-trained facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Taylor DeBusk, to accommodate more patients and expand the practice’s procedure offerings. Dr. Basu also plans to add more highly qualified staff for greater availability and enhanced patient experience at both his flagship Cypress location and his second location in Galleria/Uptown Houston, which he opened in 2020.
Procedures on the rise
Cosmetic procedures, in general, have seen an uptick, but the “Zoom era” has made the desire for specific procedures stand out among the rest, including:
Dr. Basu credits the increase in these procedures to patients seeing their reflection on video calls, combined with teleworking and hybrid schedules making recovery at home easier.
“It’s hard to believe but we are still in expansion mode,” commented Dr. Basu. “Of course it’s wise to be judicious—we read the headlines like everyone else—but there are no signs of slowing.”
