How can I get rid of a double chin?

A double chin is often hereditary, and it can be nearly impossible to treat with diet and exercise alone. Fortunately, there are numerous cosmetic treatments and procedures to treat submental fullness (the medical term for a double chin), transforming your jawline and facial profile.

Board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Taylor DeBusk offers a full range of options so that your procedure can be closely customized for your anatomical concerns and your allowable recovery time. Below, we explain 7 double chin treatments you should know about.

Submentoplasty

A procedure that is currently growing in popularity, submentoplasty is ideal for patients with muscular laxity (stretched muscles) at the root of their double chin, as well as fat deposits. This procedure reshapes muscle and sculpts away fat in the submental area to give you a more defined jawline and chin through small, discreet incisions.

Single-incision neck lift

If you are concerned not just with excess fat but also with some loose skin below the chin, a single-incision neck lift is an option that can create a noteworthy transformation for the right patient, with a small incision hidden below the chin and several days of downtime. Younger patients in their 30s or 40s who are not quite ready for a full neck lift may benefit the most from this procedure.

Neck lift

For patients with significant skin laxity and crepe-like skin in the neck area, a full neck lift may provide the most transformative solution, with the trade-off of 1-2 weeks of downtime to recover. This surgical procedure addresses fat, skin, and muscle concerns through incisions placed around the ears and sometimes under the chin, restoring the jawline’s contour, addressing jowls, and tightening the skin.

Liposuction

As a reliable and versatile surgical procedure, liposuction is highly effective for reducing submental fullness caused by stubborn fat deposits. This surgical procedure offers a direct approach by suctioning out the excess fat from the target area. Performed by a facial plastic surgeon with aesthetic expertise, liposuction can provide dramatic results if your primary issue is an accumulation of fat beneath the skin.

Necktite

NeckTite can tighten skin, eliminate small fat deposits, and stimulate collagen production in the neck for a slimmer, more youthful appearance. As part of the BodyTite system, NeckTite uses radiofrequency (RF) technology that tightens the skin through very small incisions, without requiring significant downtime to achieve a more defined jawline.

While liposuction on its own removes fat, it cannot tighten loose skin; similarly, NeckTite can tighten loose neck tissues but cannot remove a significant amount of excess fat without added liposuction. By combining liposuction with radiofrequency energy in a procedure known as radiofrequency-assisted liposuction (RFAL), a facial plastic surgeon can do both through small incisions, tightening loose tissues while removing stubborn fat deposits.

Kybella fat reduction injections

Kybella® works quite differently from other procedures: it is an FDA-approved injectable that contains a naturally-occurring enzyme, deoxycholic acid, that can dissolve unwanted fat in the space between your neck and chin. Most patients achieve results in a series of 2 to 6 treatment sessions, spaced about 1 month apart, with some bruising or swelling side effects that resolve within about a week after each injection. In addition to eliminating excess fat, Kybella also increases skin’s collagen production, tightening tissues on the chin and neck.

CoolSculpting non-surgical fat reduction

For those seeking a completely needle-free treatment, CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, FDA-cleared option specifically designed to freeze away fat cells, using a specialized applicator anatomically matched to the target area. Coolsculpting employs a principle called cryolipolysis, wherein a controlled cool temperature is applied through the skin to target fat cells below, which causes them to crystallize and eventually die. Over time, your body naturally processes and eliminates these dead cells, reducing the fat layer. This is an ideal option for patients without significant skin laxity and with a smaller amount of fat below the chin, and it comes with the benefit of zero downtime.
