Tummy Tuck Surgery
Both men and women who have lost a considerable amount of weight may now deal with excess skin pooling around their midsection. As a final step of the weight loss process, these patients often go to cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bob Basu for a tummy tuck in Houston.
Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
Individuals who have lost weight and now exhibit hanging skin around their stomach may be ideal patients for a tummy tuck under certain conditions. It is important that a patient be at a stable body weight, as further weight loss may result in the excess skin returning post-surgery. It is also important to be a nonsmoker to ensure proper recovery.
Finally, women who may become pregnant in the future are advised against tummy tuck surgery as pregnancy may undo the positive effects. Following a tummy tuck, you should have a slimmer silhouette and many of your clothes may also fit better.

A tummy tuck can be combined with other procedures such as liposuction of your waists or flanks (i.e. love handles) to fine tune your result.
If you are interested in an overall body rejuvenation, a tummy tuck can be performed within a series of plastic surgery procedures, as part of a mommy makeover, which may include liposuction, breast implants and breast lift surgery to restore a pre-baby look.
What is involved in a tummy tuck?
During your consultation, Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Basu will discuss your concerns with you and explain the details of a tummy tuck. He will work with you to determine a surgical plan that best suits your needs to create the results that you hope for.
Your tummy tuck procedure will take place using general anesthesia. If the stomach muscles are to be repaired, you will receive a muscle relaxant as well. Your surgery may last from one to two hours.
When beginning the procedure, Dr. Basu will make an incision just under your pubic line and another just under the bikini or underwear line. The skin between these incisions will be removed. The remaining skin will be pulled down from near your bikini line to meet the skin at your pubic line. This will create a flatter, toned-looking stomach.
If necessary, stretched abdominal muscles will be repaired with sutures. Dr. Basu will then close the incisions with sutures and apply a dressing to protect the incisions as they heal.
What is Recovery Like After Tummy Tuck?
As you recover from your procedure, you will wear a compression garment to maintain the new contours of your stomach. You may experience some swelling and discomfort for which Dr. Basu will prescribe medication. Dr. Basu will ask you to walk around soon after your operation, but it will take two to three weeks before you are recovered enough to return to most daily activities.
