Juvederm Injections

In recent years, injectable fillers have become the cornerstone of non-surgical facial rejuvenation because they can restore volume to the skin in a way that plastic surgery and other cosmetic treatments cannot. Juvederm is one of the safest, most effective injectable fillers because it offers smooth, natural-looking results with a very low risk of side effects.

What is Juvederm?

logo-juvedermJuvederm is an injectable dermal filler designed to plump and enhance the soft tissues of the skin. It is made of hyaluronic acid gel, a naturally-occurring substance found in the connective tissues of joints in the human body.

Juvederm XC, the latest formulation of Juvederm, also contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, so no pre-treatment anesthesia or additional numbing is required to ensure your Juvederm treatment is comfortable.

Patients who seek Juvederm injections typically wish to:

  • Reduce facial wrinkles and creases
  • Plump thin lips
  • Fill in acne scars and other skin depressions
  • Treat under eye circles and puffiness
  • Restore volume to the hands
  • Enhance the shape of the cheeks, chin and nose

How Juvederm Injections Work

When injected, the hyaluronic acid gel in Juvederm hydrates the skin, temporarily adding volume from beneath the skin’s surface to create a smoother, more youthful appearance. The Juvederm product is gradually broken down and safely absorbed by the body over a period of about 4-9 months. How long Juvederm lasts depends largely on your unique body chemistry as well as the area(s) you had treated. Areas where more movement occurs, such as the lips, usually require repeat Juvederm injections more frequently than areas like the nose or chin.

During Juvederm treatment, Dr. Basu will cleanse your skin and discuss the strategic injection points he will use to correct your cosmetic concerns. Dr. Basu will then inject the Juvederm product, a process that takes only 15-20 minutes. Most patients require 1-2 syringes of Juvederm during their initial treatment session, and additional product may be needed for touch-up injections 1-2 weeks later.

Juvederm Side Effects

Following your Juvederm injections, you may return to normal daily activities immediately; however, Dr. Basu may instruct you to avoid sun exposure and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours. Dr. Basu may also recommend applying ice to the treatment area to reduce swelling and supply you with other post-treatment instructions to minimize risks and ensure great results.

Juvederm is FDA approved and may result in mild, temporary side effects, such as bruising, redness and swelling, which last about one week or less. Other, more serious potential Juvederm side effects, such as developing lumps or bumps are less common and can typically be avoided by choosing an experienced, highly-skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Basu to perform your injections.

Juvederm vs. Radiesse

Juvederm is often compared to Radiesse, another injectable filler product with a very different composition. While both Juvederm and Radiesse are made of substances found naturally in our bodies, Radiesse is a much denser product and must be injected deeper in skin tissues to achieve great results. For this reason, Radiesse is best for moderate to deep wrinkles and creases or for long-term volume enhancement in bony areas like the cheeks, nose and chin. Unlike Juvederm, Radiesse is not safe for lip enhancement and should not be injected under the eyes.

Radiesse also produces longer-lasting wrinkle reduction and soft tissue augmentation results than Juvederm, which means it is a greater commitment for patients. In fact, many patients who seek Radiesse injections often do so only after they have had Juvederm or Restylane injections and have an idea of the results they can expect before committing to an injectable filler that can last well over a year.
