Houston Plastic Surgeon Cites Therapeutic Benefits for Women that Choose Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy

Referencing an American Society of Plastic Surgeons study indicating that 98% of breast cancer patients are satisfied with their choice to undergo reconstructive surgery, renowned Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Bob Basu explains why breast reconstruction following a mastectomy provides therapeutic benefits for breast cancer survivors.

Houston TX (Vocus/PRWEB ) April 21, 2009 – The American Society of Plastic Surgeons conducted an eye opening study which indicates that nearly 100% of breast cancer survivors were satisfied with their breast reconstruction surgery, while 98% would openly have the procedure again if given a choice.

So what about this reconstructive procedure is so wonderfully satisfying for mastectomy patients?

According to board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bob Basu, breast reconstruction following a mastectomy has many therapeutic benefits, including increased self-esteem, feelings of control in an otherwise stressful situation and the ability to feel “normal” again following a mastectomy.

“With advances in reconstructive plastic surgery, breast reconstruction is not only an opportunity to restore oneself after cancer treatment, but for some women, it can be an opportunity to enhance,”says Dr. Basu. “The reconstruction process often gives women a boost of confidence and provides a positive endpoint to their arduous journey with breast cancer treatment”.

Additionally, Dr. Basu points out that the variety of choices and high level of participation in the breast restoration process allows a woman to feel more in control of her medical care.

“In Houston, breast reconstruction at the Center for Advanced Breast Restoration, offers real options to restore oneself after cancer treatment. We understand that the treatment of breast cancer involves an arduous journey, and we believe that part of this difficult journey should include restoration options,” continues Dr. Basu.

Similarly, in his quest to help patients familiarize themselves with breast reconstruction surgery options, Dr. Basu has also constructed an online resource guide to help women make better informed decisions following their mastectomy.

Furthermore, in-person meetings with Dr. Basu are an additional opportunity for women to take control of their physical appearance and emotional concerns following a mastectomy.

Here, women can personally discuss their goals and discuss their reconstructive options, whether it is with implants or state-of-the-art muscle-sparing tissue only techniques like the DIEP flap breast reconstruction. Houston surgeon Dr. Basu again, “We can tailor a reconstructive plan to meet the cosmetic goals of each individual patient, whether it entails a rejuvenating breast lift, reduction, or augmentation.”

“And the good news is that all of the reconstruction options available to breast cancer survivors are covered by insurance,” adds Basu.

In Texas, breast reconstruction information and surgery options can be found at breastrestoration.net. Patients considering reconstructive breast augmentation following a mastectomy are encouraged to review Dr. Basu’s online resource guide or call (713) 799-2278for further information on reconstructive surgery.
